Blut Aus Nord: 777 – Sect(s)
02/06/11 || Khlysty
In one short phrase: “MoRT” with actual songs and more variety. In one not so short word: fucking amazing.
Okay, so now you know all there is to know about this fucker, so go and buy it and leave me alone to ramble aimlessly about what a majestic, inspired and truly scary monster (in the classical sense of the word, that is, “divine creature”) Blut Aus Nord has become and is still becoming. From now on, you read at your own risk.
First thing to know is that THIS IS DEFINITELY, ABSOLUTELY NOT THE KIND OF MUSIC THAT ONE LISTENS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF MIND-ALTERING SUBSTANCES! DO THIS AND YOU’RE FUCKED FOR GOOD! THE LABYRINTHINE NATURE OF THE SOUNDS EMANATING FROM THE SPEAKERS CAN EASILY MAKE YOU LOOSE YOUR MIND AND TURN AGAINST THE ONES YOU LOVE! SO, LISTEN TO THIS TOTALLY CLEAN, IF YOU KNOW WHAT’S GOOD FOR YOU!
Vindsval and Co. have already swathed a path all of their own within the realms of extreme music. By combining black metal’s inherent starkness with their own fucked-up, distorted version of what constitutes music, these guys have created some of the most disturbing, nausea-inducing and (sometimes) terrifyingly beautiful sounds to come from a “metal band”. Vindsval’s guitar pyrotechnics –a combination of pure shredding genius, atonality, dissonance and comfuckingpletely destroyed rhythmic patterns- here at “777 – Sect(s)” reach a new, almost sublime plateau of unfuckwithability. Either when tremolo-picking like a bastard, or when creating whole strata of serpentine riffs, the guy’s on fire and it takes time and devotion to even begin to understand what the fuck he’s doing.
The drummer,… I really don’t know and wouldn’t even try to guess what he plays, or what time signatures he follows. After a while, the drums take an almost lead-instrument nature, creating schemata alien and scary in their internal precision and propelling the music as much as the guitars. I won’t comment on his blasting abilities, they’re just incomparable. But, even when he goes for a dubby beat (as the one that closes “Epitome I”, ha, I haven’t even told you that the song titles are “Epitome I – VI”, nor have I told you that this record is part of a trilogy that’ll be fully presented in 2011, yes, three records in one fucking year…), he keeps fucking up the backbeat, in a sick and creative way.
And, then there are the synths and the sounds, an industrial menace that permeates every nook and cranny of the six “Epitomes”, sometimes almost inaudible, but always there, always present, always like an itch that you cannot scratch. And the speedings-up and the slowings-down in each composition, creating this sea-sickness feeling in your mind and this certain unease in your soul and I know that I’m not making any sense, so I won’t try anymore to convey with words the majesty and horror that Blut Aus Nord has become. You have to go to them and see the wonders and atrocities by yourself.
